Match Group (MTCH) CEO Spencer Rascoff is hoping a product revamp at Tinder could do its part in addressing the loneliness epidemic — which may only get worse because of AI companions.
"There is a loneliness epidemic. It is existential for our species. It is a mental health crisis that comes from that loneliness," Rascoff told Yahoo Finance from the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Tech Conference (video above). "Most of the other technology companies out there … are about increasing engagement. We are about creating human connection. And so I really think that this is why I came out of retirement to take this job as CEO of Match Group. I connected deeply with this mission. I think we're one of the very few companies that can make a dent in the loneliness epidemic."
Rascoff has pushed the company into live events for people to meet, with more on the way.
He has also improved Tinder's user experience to focus more on quality engagement, bringing the company to the cusp of delivering daily active user growth after many quarters of decline.
